Keith Burton, Principal

Keith Burton graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Louisiana State University in Shreveport in 1991 and a Masters Degree in Gifted Education and Educational Leadership in 1993. He has completed 40+ post graduate hours in the areas of curriculum and Educational Leadership. As a classroom teacher, Mr. Burton was recognized as one of Shreveport's Outstanding Young Educators and was selected as Louisiana's first recipient of the Milken National Educator's Award ($25,000). He serves as an adjunct member of the graduate faculties at LSU in Shreveport and Centenary College with course emphasis on Educational Leadership. He serves the Louisiana Department of Education as a new principal mentor. Before coming to South Highlands Elementary Magnet School in 2003, Mr. Burton was principal of Fairfield Elementary Magnet School. He is married to Tina Foster Burton, who teaches kindergarten in Caddo Parish. They have 3 children, Ryan, Will, and Anna Kate.


 

Belinda Scott, Coordinator

Belinda Scott graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Southern University Baton Rouge and a Masters Degree in Elementary Education and Reading from The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. In December 2004, Belinda received her certification as Supervisor of Instruction from Centenary College. Belinda has taught in the states of Indiana and Texas before coming to Louisiana. Her teaching experience includes serving as a K-2 Reading Specialist, and teaching grades two, through five. Belinda moved to South Highlands Elementary Magnet in 1997, where she began teaching as a fifth grade teacher for 7 years, but is currently serving as part of the South Highlands administrative team as Instructional Coordinator.  She has one daughter, Ashley Nicole who is a graduate student in Baton Rouge. Belinda loves to read, watch old movies, garden, and add to her 20 year collection of postcards.


Dena Howard, Counselor

Dena Howard graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Louisiana State University in 1991 and a Master Degree in Elementary Education with a Reading Specialist from Centenary College in 2001. In May of 2004, Dena completed her certification in School Counseling at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. Dena was a classroom teacher from 1991-2001 in Caddo Parish where she taught various lower elementary grade levels. In August of 2001, Dena moved to South Highlands and taught first grade until 2004 when she became the school counselor. Dena has been married to her husband Jeff since 1991, and they have two sons Tyler and Matthew. In her free time, she enjoys cooking for family and friends and watching her sons play sports!
