South Highlands celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2008 and was the district's first elementary magnet school. In 1998, South Highlands was rated as the top elementary school in the state and has maintained that rank every year. It achieved the state’s highest honor, A School of Academic Excellence and is a Louisiana 5-Star school. South Highlands was nationally recognized in 2001 and again in 2005, as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.
